Current Song I'm Listening To: We Insist by Zoe Keating
Last evening I was planning on going to pick wild blackberries because they are in peak season right now here. I saw a huge patch over a few miles of trail that I was running on the day prior so I was going to ride my bike back to it. On my way to the patch I passed by the city skatepark and I thought, oh I'll ride my mountain bike in there that will be fun. I was about to do a routine hop onto this box that I did onto a log in the woods less than a week prior. But here, my foot slipped off of the pedal and the hop was not executed and my back tire slammed into the metal corner and I had an immediate flat tire.
So I walked my bike home and decided now since this happened, I guess I will go to the open mic I was thinking abut going to. It ended up I only had about 45 minutes to practice and try to remember my lyrics to my songs. I got to the open mic at this place called Fireworks, they do wood fired pizza and artisan deserts. It turns out that this was a singer/songwriter competition that you had to pay five bucks to enter into. After paying my five dollars I started to get a little nervous. I was the fourth person to go of nine in the warm up round where we play two songs. I played If 'If you were the one for me' and 'Old Line State' and felt pretty good about them. There were some people who went who were like, "oh yeah I just got back from my California tour."
The final round was the money round and they decided the winner with this sketchy applause-o-meter that reads decibels which really just measures how many friends you brought to the open mic. The point being, I played 'Since I Don't Know When' the one I write with the alternate tuning and rocked the house. I ended up coming in second place to this typical hipster kid who flipped his hair off of his left eye while playing. Although he was pretty legit, he plays regular gigs for money all over Portland, so I felt pretty good coming in second to him, he was good at what he did, but his music sounded just like every other whiny indie dick. And I didn't come with any friends I came by myself so my decibel read-out was real, not bullshit friends pity-cheering. I won 12 dollars (time to pay rent) and the first place winner gets to go to the championship round on September 24. But that indie kid already came in first some other time so the second place person got to go to the championship round, and that was me. So I will be in that championship and supposedly its pretty big, so I'm stoked. I have to get writing new songs!
This morning I woke up and remembered my bike was FUBAR so I got to work. I pulled my flat and ruptured tube off. Disconnected all necessary leavers and checked the rim. It was just as I expected, the rim was dented in. (I am pretty proud about this next part) I did some sweet metalworking and hammed the rim out and shaved off all sharp metal edges, put in a new tube I had laying around and it seems to be doing fine. But it made me realize, I need to sell my mountain bike while it is still worth something so I can upgrade to one with full-suspension and disc brakes.
I then road that newly reborn bike to the blackberries and picked probably about three quarts of blackberries. I used one quart to make jam, one quart out to eat now and one quart frozen for later. The reason it was like Henry is because there would always be an element of claws in skin whenever you interacted with Henry. And the thorns felt exactly like Henry's claws, not extremely painful, but just annoying and you knew if you moved andy more millimeters the pain would start. Every time you go into the wild blackberry patches there would be a moment where you catch some thorns and its like, "Oh, don't move, slowly move the bottom of your left tricep 87 degrees clockwise, take a quarter step forward and pirouette and you might get out of this one with your clothing garment intact and not losing a red cross amount of blood.
This is the person I was listening to, check her out (You probably wouldn't have heard of her, thats what the guy who I came in 2nd to would have said).
I'm going to try and put what song I'm listening to at the time for new posts.
Hi, I'm Nilo. Living in Oregon I mostly enjoy sports by the season. Summer is mountain biking, kayaking and climbing. Fall is kayaking and surfing. Winter is skiing and backcountry skiing. Spring is kayaking and late skiing. All with some traveling thrown in there
